Knauf-Logo

Knauf is one of the world's leading suppliers of building materials and solutions. Founded as a family business in 1932, Knauf has grown into a global multi-brand company with 40,000 employees in 90 countries. Knauf manufactures state-of-the-art building products for interior design and insulation as well as acoustic ceilings. Their vast offerings include drywall systems, plasters, insulating materials, and external thermal insulation composition systems, along with paints, flowing screeds, and flooring systems.

The Knauf Group has an in-house broker that structures insurance activities for their global operations. The insurance team manages over 300 property insurance policies, seller’s and product liability policies, as well as coverages for marine shipments. Specialty insurances such as D&O and credit insurance for various countries are managed as well.

Knauf's insurance team has the exciting task of providing solutions for the internal initiatives of the company. They work diligently to ensure a global insurance strategy is in place that accounts for all the specialties of the business. In addition to considering the nuances of the insurance market for each division, the team communicates effectively with employees across all divisions to align insurance strategy with corporate objectives.

Knauf has continued their rapid growth trajectory, with many recent mergers and acquisitions requiring additional insurance considerations.

The Challenge

With such complex operations and insurance requirements, Knauf was faced with data silos and limitations with their previous software solution. The insurance team relied on various databases to collect claims, premiums, property values, and other relevant information to make informed decisions.

"The data was collected but not connected. Seeing the groups and their different perspectives and connecting the dots was not possible with the databases. We decided to find a new approach."

The Solution

ClaimsLaptop

Knauf set out to find an integrated risk management system to bring together data from several different sources into a single platform. In early 2021, the team began the implementation process with Ventiv IRM to connect risk activities across the business. The Knauf risk and insurance team now uses Ventiv IRM on a daily basis, and their processes have become much more efficient.

“The team is really happy because it’s easier now than before. They also see the results and what we can do with the system."

The Knauf Insurance team is committed to implementing digital solutions and optimizing work processes They have refined protocols for entering data in the system and expedited data imports with APIs. Most notably, Ventiv worked with the Knauf risk and insurance team to connect Ventiv IRM with the platform of an international insurer. With this API, the Knauf team can automate the transport of data and reduce manual entry.

But even where manual data entry is still needed, there is a solution to make life easier. Ventiv Digital is a fully customizable data entry tool that can be used on both, desktop computers and mobile devices. Among other things, it helps with property value collection and risk assessment. Data captured with Ventiv Digital flows seamlessly into Ventiv IRM for analysis and reporting. This allows the insurance team to quickly and accurately take appropriate action and share results with management or other departments.

The Outcomes

Systematic Fleet Management

Having a full overview of the fleet is essential to executing the right insurance strategy. Prior to working with Ventiv, Knauf stored vehicle data in an access database. The company decided to transfer all historical data from previous years into Ventiv IRM for evaluation purposes, and to assign the damage cases to the corresponding vehicles, locations, and drivers.

Today, the Knauf insurance team uses Ventiv IRM as a full fleet management software for its approximately 1,500 vehicles, including trucks, cars, and trailers. They store all the necessary documentation associated with their vehicles and all information regarding insurance and fees in the system. The team updates the system whenever a new car is purchased, or a contract is running out. With Ventiv IRM, the team now has a centralized source of truth for all fleet management.

Resilience and Resolve

The move from traditional on-premise databases to a cloud-hosted integrated risk management software was anything but a spur-of-the-moment decision for Knauf. The company made a substantial effort to define the most fitting solution and find it on the market. While the driving factor was functionality, data protection was very high on the list of priorities as well. Being a top scorer in both functionality, and cyber security, Ventiv won the competition.

When Ventiv IRM was being implemented at Knauf, the software was expected to create efficiencies, but who could have foreseen that the platform would maintain a fully operational department during the COVID virus pandemic? While the lockdown slowed down the activities of many other parts of the company, Ventiv IRM allowed members of the Knauf insurance team to seamlessly continue their work remotely. Data entry and data processing took place as usual, and the company’s management team received their monthly reports in the desired quality and without delay.

“With Ventiv IRM in place, we were able to keep the insurance operations running effectively during the Covid lockdown."
